Sophia Rose Scholtes

Sophia Rose Scholtes
7-23-10
7 lbs. 5 oz.
20 in. long

Well, after 16 hours of labor and 2 hours of pushing we welcomed our baby girl Sophia Rose. We had a few long, hard days but it was all worth it of course.

We checked into the hospital at 7:30 on Thursday morning and we got started right away. They broke my water, well, not really broke it because when he did nothing came out! He also started me on pitocin right away too. I was still pretty comfortable until around mid morning when I started feeling the contractions but they were very manageable and I was able to just breathe through them. By 1-2 though, they were coming quite fast and getting very painful. I made it until around 2: 30 when I had to ask for pain medication. Once the epidural was given I was feeling much better and comfortable. A few times throughout the whole thing I was feeling really well that I didn't push the button to give more medicine and I had to catch back up and went through about an hour of really painful contractions.

Will was great through it all and I don't know that I could of done it without him. By 11:00 PM I was 10 cm. dilated and was told we could start pushing. By that time everyone was very ready for me to start pushing and to be able to meet Sophia. I pushed for what seemed like forever and wasn't really getting anywhere. I was getting pretty frustrated and was told that we were going to push for another hour then it was time to consult with the Dr. and figure out what the next step would be. By a quarter to 1, the Dr was called in and we were told that the baby wasn't coming down with just my efforts so they were going to try the vacuum. They sent in a few more nurses and told me what to expect and got to business. I was a little nervous about the whole thing but I was pretty tired and frustrated by that point so I didn't really complain or resist. The vacuum didn't work and the Dr. said she just wasn't making it down so we were going to have to do a C- Section.

I immediately started crying in frustration and disappointment and everything all seemed to be happening at once. A whole crew of nurses rushed in the room to prep me and Will for what was going to happen. I was really scared and didn't know what to expect. As they wheeled me out I couldn't even think that Sophia was going to be here soon, I was so scared and bummed out.

The C-Section went well but it was very uncomfortable as I felt everything and was cold and shivering to boot. We were told my pelvis was just too small for Sophia to fit through and there was nothing I could really do about it.

In the end, we got little to no sleep the first night at the hospital but as the weekend has gone on we have caught up on sleep and are feeling great. We are so in love with our new little Sophia and have felt so much love and support from all our visitors and people who have sent well wishes.

We get to go home tomorrow and we are very ready to be there. Will's parents are staying for a few days to help out and we are excited to spend some more time with Sophia and Grandma and Grandpa.
